How to Take a Fingerprint for Your Jewellery
Pencil & Tape Method
1.Prepare: Wash and dry your hands. Use clean, plain white paper.
2.Make a graphite patch: Scribble a thick, dark patch with a soft pencil. Go over it several times to build up plenty of graphite.
3.Coat your finger: Rub the fingertip you’d like to use over the graphite until it’s well covered.
4.Lift the print: Press the sticky side of clear tape firmly onto the fingertip.
5.Transfer: Peel the tape away carefully and stick it onto a clean sheet of white paper.
6.Repeat: Take several prints from the same or different fingers. Some may be darker or show more detail.
7.Photograph: Place the paper on a flat surface in good light and take a clear, close photo from above, leaving some white space around
the print.
Ink Pad Method (Ask me for a kit, £5 posted)
1.Ink the finger: Press your chosen fingertip onto a dark ink pad.
2.Print: Place the finger on smooth white paper.
3.Dry: Allow the print to dry completely.
4.Photograph: Take a clear, well-lit photo once the ink has dried.
Tips for Best Results
Thumbs often give strong detail, but try different fingers to see which works best.
Take multiple prints—you’ll have more options to choose from.
For maximum clarity, consider scanning the fingerprint sheet instead of photographing.
